Liberal Resistance Maquis

We began as the military, intelligence, diplomatic, security, espionage, and logistics arm of Labour of Rhea. On October 4, 3307 the Liberal Resistance Maquis (MAKE) fully liberated Rhea 1 A, which allowed the elected leaders of Labour of Rhea and their parliament time to meet and discuss future strategy. An unexpected outcome of this meeting was a formal democratic constitution being ratified on November 1, 3307. The constitution laid out a new path forward for defenders of democracy by creating individual, unique, and sovereign mobile-city-states composed of volunteer Labour of Rhea young adults that supported MAKE. Fleet Carrier Democracy was honored to be chartered and outfitted as the first, of hopefully many, new city states to take the fight for the survival, restoration, and principles of democracy to the Federation.

On February 8, 3308, the emissaries of MAKE settled in the Decean system and on March 20, 3308, The People of MAKE fully liberated the system from its corporate (fascist), communist, and feudal overlords. Decean became the official home system of democracy loving people everywhere. During the liberation of Decean, MAKE was reformed consistent with its independent charter. Commanders wishing to return to Labour of Rhea were greeted as heroes and parted as family. Commanders wishing to build a flourishing new democracy continued to pledge their service to City State Democracy, MAKE, and Decean.

What’s in a Name?

Our Squadron Identification is MAKE. This is shorthand for the phonetic spelling of Maquis, or ma-ˈkē.

Our name represents our ideology, values, and governing philosophies.

Liberal

Our members identify as liberals and support the foundations of liberalism. Liberalism is based on enlightenment thinking that places individual liberty as the most important political goal. Liberals emphasize individual rights and equality of opportunity. We see government as a necessary force to protect people’s rights. These rights include freedom of thought, freedom of speech, and inviolable human rights (the rights to life, liberty, and property). We do not see inherent value in traditions and believe that society must continue to evolve for the greater benefit of all humanity. We have no foundational assumptions about hereditary status, religion, or divine rights of rulers that take precedence over other aspects of rule by The People. We believe that all government must be democratic (representative or true) and must have limitations (separations of power between executive, legislative, and judicial branches). We adhere to the rule of law, a capitalist mixed-economy with both private-owned and state-owned enterprises (each has a realm, private enterprise has no business running things like prisons for instance), and build transparent governments. The word “liberal” is derived from the Latin “liber” which means “free” or “not a slave” and we intend to live and die as a free people. We are open-minded, generous, and free from prejudice. Despite what our detractors would tell you, we are not communists, socialists, or Marxists.

Resistance

We actively resist all forms of undemocratic government. Our primary goal is to return democratic governance to the Federation. The pillars of democracy include liberty, equality, and justice. These pillars have been crushed under the corporate governance of the Federation. The interests of liberty and equality must be balanced by justice if people are to live together in a free and civil society. In practice, this means that we support the lawful orders given to us by our duly elected leaders. We support their missions first, above all others, in order to spread the influence of democracy. When visiting a system we support the interests of fellow democracies before accepting missions from others. We will never act against the interests of our mother democracy and lifetime ally, Labour of Rhea, or democracy.

Maquis

We are the underdogs in this fight. As such, we have borrowed from the tactics of past freedom fighters. We fight from the shadows like our namesakes before us. Maquis means shrubland. Maquis were guerilla fighters that hid in the high shrublands in southeastern France during Earth’s ancient World War II. They used these tactics successfully against the Nazi regime to bring an end to fascism and to restore democracy to their homeland. We intend to do the same.
