As many of you know, I name my ships after women resistance fighters. Today, I share the name of my Viper Mk III: Renia Kukielka.
Renia fought for democracy against ancient Earth’s Nazis during World War II. She was a courier for the aptly named group Freedom. She wrote a memoir that was published in 1945 giving her first-person account of the war. Renia was able to escape a ghetto using fake documents, join the resistance, and carried cash to buy her fellow freedom fighters food, medicine, weapons, and bullets. She warned in her memoir that Nazis thought “killing a person was easier than smoking a cigarette.” Renia was fueled by rage and a deep sense of justice to put an end to fascist rule. May we all be guided by her sense of duty and compassion for her fellow man.
