As I made my travels through 92 galaxies, I have witnessed countless iterations where sentient species stopped being kind to one another. In the worst cases, a group would believe itself superior to all others and delegitimize them. This always bred a sense of entitlement, cruelty, and hierarchy of rights by the “superior” group. Many times, this led to an illiberal government being created where other sentients were enslaved or purged. Cruelty of those following an illiberal path was the norm, not the exception.
History in all these galaxies demonstrated that liberalism led to better governmental outcomes for all sentients involved. Not all the societies were perfect, but they all held the promise of evolution, change, and progress. Civil rights increased over time; freedoms grew; cultures were respected; nations were multicultural, plural, and diverse. This gave them strength to overcome most challenges, especially as sentient species learned to listen to each other, because from many different viewpoints came many more solutions. Those solutions were better when all involved were deemed to be equals and shared in their society’s benefits and rewards.
The lesson I learned was simple: Kindness is not weakness. In fact, it is a weakness to not be kind.
